Meet Hugo: Our Head of Paw-duct Testing (And the Best Boy!)

 

Welcome to Hugo’s Eco Paws!

We’ve been busy getting the shop ready, hand-selecting products that meet our core mission: to provide high-quality, safe, and sustainable goods that genuinely enhance your pets’ well-being.

The inspiration for this entire shop is my wonderful Welsh Springer Spaniel, Hugo. If you’re curious about his story and how we got started, you can find more details on our [About Page]. But for now, you should know one crucial thing: Hugo is the official Head of Product Testing here. (We also have Salem, our 10-year-old black cat, whom Hugo meticulously supervises at all times.)

 

The Inspiration Behind the Durability

 

If there’s one thing Hugo is, it’s a brutal toy critic.

Over the years, the sheer speed of his toy destruction was the driving force behind this entire shop. Hugo is incredibly heavy on toys—he loves to pin things down with his paws and rip bits off, a technique that normally results in destruction in minutes. Tennis balls last about 30 seconds.

I distinctly remember one car journey home from the pet shop with a supposedly “tough” toy. I kept seeing it periodically appear over the back seats as he threw it around. We arrived home to find he had ripped the ears off in ten minutes flat!

This journey of trial-and-error inspired our two core goals: providing products that are sustainable, either by being eco-friendly or by being designed and built to truly last.

 

The Hugo Test: A Trial by Paw

 

For our launch, I selected several products for Hugo to put through a rigorous test. I wanted to see if our initial selections could stand up to the challenge.

Here are a few of the products that have proudly passed the “Hugo Test”:

 

1. The Daddy Octopus (The Plush Toy That Punches Above Its Weight)

 

I’m usually skeptical of any plush toy, but I selected the Daddy Octopus specifically to challenge its durability. We took it on holiday, and it survived Hugo incredibly well. It only finally met its match when my mum joined us with Charlie, her 40kg Black Labrador.

It took the combined effort and pulling power of two large dogs for one leg to finally give out. I am incredibly impressed with how well this plush toy survived what we affectionately call the "Double-Dog Destruction Test."

 

2. The Indestructible Ball & Tug

 

We’ve also been testing two other items that have held up remarkably well:

• Gor Sustain Rubba Ultima Balls: A true test of endurance for any chewing enthusiast.

• Gor Flex Tough Tug: A great option for playtime that hasn’t shown any signs of wear and tear.

We’re pleased to report that all these products have survived the first round of heavy-duty testing!
